Configuring Internet Explorer for MacIntosh to display PDF files

If you have an Adobe Acrobat product (4.0 or later ) that displays PDF files, you can display PDF files in Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.x or 5 in one of two ways:

  • Use the Acrobat PDFViewer plug-in. Internet Explorer displays PDF files within its browser window.
  • Configure Internet Explorer to use the Acrobat product as a helper application. PDF files appear within the Acrobat product window. (If you use an Acrobat 4.x product, use this method for best results).

Using the PDFViewer Plug-in
The PDFViewer plug-in is included with Acrobat products (version 4.0 and later) that display PDF files. If you select a PDF file while the PDFViewer plug-in is installed, the file downloads to Internet Explorer's Temp folder, and then Internet Explorer uses the Acrobat product to display the file within its browser window.

To install the PDFViewer plug-in, move the PDFViewer file from the Adobe Acrobat [4.0 or 5.0] Web Browser Plug-in folder into the Internet Explorer: Plug-ins folder.

Note: Before you can use the plug-in, you need to make sure that Acrobat is deselected as a helper application in Internet Explorer.

To deselect Acrobat as a helper application in Internet Explorer 5:
1. Choose Edit > Preferences.
2. Under Receiving Files in the scroll list, click File Helpers. (If necessary, click the triangle next to Receiving Files to expand the view.)
3. In the File Helper Settings panel, select Portable Document Format, and then click Change.
4. Choose View With Plug-in from the How To Handle pop-up menu.
5. Select the PDFViewer plug-in file in the Plug-in name pop-up menu.
6. Click OK to close the dialog boxes.
7. Restart Internet Explorer.

To deselect Acrobat as a helper application in Internet Explorer 4.x:
1. Choose Edit > Preferences.
2. Under Receiving Files, click File Helpers.
3. In the File Helper Settings pane, select Portable Document Format, and then click Change.
4. Choose View With Plug-in from the How To Handle pop-up menu; then click Browse.
5. Select the PDFViewer plug-in file in the Internet Explorer: Plug-ins folder; then click Open. The name "PDFViewer" should appear next to "Plug-in name."
6. Click OK to close the dialog boxes.
7. Restart Internet Explorer.

Configuring Internet Explorer to Use Acrobat as a Helper Application
When you configure Internet Explorer to use Acrobat as a helper application, Internet Explorer starts your Acrobat product (4.0 or later) and then displays PDF files within the Acrobat product window.

To configure Internet Explorer 4.x or 5 to use Acrobat as a helper application:
1. If the PDFViewer plug-in is installed, quit Internet Explorer, and then remove the PDFViewer plug-in from the Internet Explorer: Plug-ins folder.
2. Start Internet Explorer.
3. Choose Edit > Preferences.
4. Under Receiving Files, click File Helpers.
5. In the File Helper Settings pane, select Portable Document Format and then click Change. If Portable Document Format isn't listed, click Add; then proceed with these steps.
6. Type "PDF " in the File Type text box. Make sure to include a space after the "F".
7. Type "CARO" in the Creator text box.
8. Select Binary, Use For Incoming, and Use For Outgoing in the Encoding section.
9. Choose an option from the Download Destination pop-up menu.
10. Choose View With Application from the How to Handle pop-up menu.
11. If the Acrobat product's name doesn't appear next to "Application", click Browse; then select the product's application file, and click Open.
12. Click OK to close the dialog boxes.
13. Restart Internet Explorer.

Downloading a PDF File to Your Hard Disk
You can download a PDF file to your hard disk, rather than opening it from within Internet Explorer. After you download a PDF file to your hard disk, you can copy text, distribute the file, or save the file to another disk.

To download a PDF file from a link:
1. Click and hold down the mouse on the link to a PDF file; then choose Download Link To Disk from the pop-up menu.
2. In the Save As dialog box, select a location on your hard disk; then click Save.

To download a PDF file from the PDFViewer plug-in:
1. Click the Save button (the disk icon on the toolbar).
2. In the dialog box that appears, specify a filename and location, and click Save.
