Reduce your insurance premiums
The easiest way to save on your insurance premiums is to compare prices at many different insurance sources, especially if you have moving violations. The second way to reduce your costs is to increase your deductibles, that portion of a claim that you pay yourself. Finally, there are discounts offered by various insurance companies that you should be aware of and ask about:
- Many insurers, especially the one you are currently with, will cut liability, medical and collision premiums by as much as 20% if you're accident free, meaning you've had your policy with the same company and you haven't been involved in an accident that was your fault for at least ten years. You'll usually get a smaller discount if you have three accident-free years.
- The medical-payment and no-fault premiums can be shaved by 15% if you have passive restraints, such as air bags or automatic seat belts, on the driver's side, and up to 30% if you have them on both sides.
- Anti-lock brakes and daytime running lights could knock 10% off liability, medical and collision premiums, and anti-theft devices could save 10% off the cost of comprehensive coverage.
- Insuring more than one automobile could earn a multicar discount of 10% to 20% off your total premium.
- If you have other coverage such as homeowners, life or health insurance with the same company, you might get a 5% to 20% multiple lines reduction.
- If you drive fewer than 7,500 miles a year, you may qualify for a 10% to 15% low-mileage discount.
- If you have taken a safe driving course within the last year, you may be able to save up to 10% off your premium. If you haven't taken the course, check with your insurer to determine if the savings are worth the time it would take to complete the course (usually one day, although some evening and weekend courses are available).
- If you have young drivers in the household, and they have completed a driver education course, this may entitle you to save 10%. In states where most students take this course, it may already be built in to their rates. Also, for young drivers who are full-time high school or college students and who maintain a "B" average, there are discounts from 5% to 25%.
- Older drivers, age 50 and up, may qualify for a 10% discount if there are no youthful drivers in the household.
