Typical policy considerations for in-home child care
If you are an in-home (not a mobile home) child care provider, you will need comprehensive coverage which is not included in your homeowners policy. A typical policy will combine both property and liability coverages. Options can include coverage for varied numbers of children, sexual / physical abuse and umbrella coverage. Different levels of liability and property protection, as well as various deductible options will also be offered. Types of protection offered could include those listed below.
Commercial General Liability
Provides legal representation in the case of a covered lawsuit (there may be exceptions). This insurance usually is written on an "Occurrence Form" which means that as long as the incident occurred while coverage is/was in force, it will be covered no matter when the claim is turned in (i.e. 5 years later).
Professional Liability
Protects you from any negligent act, error, or omission or failure to render professional services. This coverage extends to family, volunteers, or anyone for whom you are legally responsible in taking care of the children. This coverage allows first dollar defense by the insurance company. Limits are equal to the Commercial General Liability limits chosen. This protection typically is not provided for overnight care (usually anything over 14 hours a day).
Accidental Medical Payments
Normally provides up to a $5,000 limit per person to cover accidental medical expenses (subject to exclusions) within one year of the date of an accident. Coverage may be extended to field trips off premises. However, coverage will NOT cover children while they are in your vehicle. Allergic reactions to food and medicines administered by you also may be covered.

Sexual Molestation/abuse
Provides defense cost coverage arising out of bodily injury, property damage, or any other damages because of liability or allegations of liability resulting from sexual action, that occurs in, on, or near the insured's premises, or in conjunction with the insured's operations of child care. Limits correspond directly with the Commercial General Liability limit you purchase.
Dog Coverage
Extends liability to any occurrence of offense arising out of, caused by any dog owned by or being cared for by, or in the care, custody or control of any insured. This protection is usually for family homes only, and requires that dogs be kept separate from children during hours of operation. Dogs that are not covered include Rottweilers, Doberman Pinschers, German Shepherds, and Pit Bulls.
What is usually excluded?
Punitive damages, pollution, asbestos, lead paint poisoning, war, nuclear energy, sexual molestation, and water activities (especially pools with slides or diving boards). Trampoline injuries are usually not included.
