Evaluate your existing policy
Now that you have educated yourself on the different aspects of disability insurance, and determined your unique needs, it is time to evaluate any existing policy that you have. Remember that in the first step you located your policies and hopefully put them all together in one place where you and at least one other person can find them. Did you remember to include your disability insurance policy? If this benefit is provided by your employer, you probably only have a benefits guide that addresses this coverage. Make sure that this guide is included with your insurance policies.
Get your policy out (or your benefits guide) and read through it to make sure that you understand it. If you don't, you might need to reread the education section. Once you understand the specific provisions of your disability policy, compare them to your unique needs. Pay careful attention to what percentage of your take-home pay will be paid, how long it will be paid, and how long you have to wait to begin receiving your benefits.
Note the changes that you want or need to make for the next step. Make detailed notes to remind you of precisely what you want and why you want the changes.
