ONLINE TIPS

How to be a savvy shopper

Be relentless about discounts Visit google.com before you buy anything to see if discount codes are floating around the Web. Enter the name of the retailer or product and the word "promotion" or "rebate." A recent search for "amazon.com" turned up a code for $25 off housewares purchases of $125 or more at the site.

Read the return policy Some sites give you only 14 days; others may charge you a 15% restocking fee. You can usually find a link to these policies at the bottom of a retailer's home page.

Add in shipping costs Jupiter Research found that shipping fees are the chief reason people say they don't shop online. And no wonder. Shipping adds $55 to the price of a $300 desk chair at potterybarn.com. The best price-comparison sites, such as pricegrabber.com and shopping.com, include shipping estimates. And more and more sites will give you a break, including bananarepublic.com, where shipping is currently free on orders over $125.

Go ahead and use your credit card Two-thirds of shoppers say they are worried about using a credit-card online. Don't be. By law, you're protected for all but $50 of losses if your credit-card number is stolen--online or off. Another reason to pay with a card is that you can withhold payment if your order is damaged or of poor quality, although you have to try to work out the problem with the merchant first.

Be suspicious. Does the price seem unusually low--say 30% to 50% below other retailers? If so, you might be buying a factory-reconditioned item. Or worse, the merchant might be selling faulty, damaged or stolen goods. If you're concerned, call the seller and ask. Or simply walk away.
