Tip #1 - install foam gaskets under the cover plates on your exterior walls. On average, 20% of the air leakage in your home is through the electrical outlet or light switch plates. These gaskets may be purchased at most hardware or home stores for about 20 cents each. To install, simply remove the plate with a screwdriver, place the foam piece around the outlets or switch, and then replace the cover plate.

Tip #2 - add insulation. Start with the attick, the easiest and most cost-effective place to pad your insulation. Most homes need it to be at least six inches thick.

Tip #3 - reduce your heat at night. Lowering the temperature 10 degrees overnight can cut your heating bill by 10%.

Tip #4 - shut vents and reverse fans. Close heat-sucking bath and kitchen vents after use, and switch to the reverse setting on ceiling fans to push warm air down.

Tip #5 - check your furnace and filters. Clean filters once a month and schedule annual maintenance. Furnaces older than 15 years will convert only 70% of fuel to heat, while a new model can get you 80% to 97% efficiency.
